주여, 저의 아들이 이런 사람이 되게 하소서.
약할 때 자신의 약함을 알 수 있을 만큼 강하게 하시고 두려울 때 자신을 직면할 수 있을 만큼 용감하게 하시고 정직한 패배에 당당하고 굴하지 않으며 승리에 겸손하고 온유한 사람이 되게 하소서. 소원하기보다 행동으로 보이며 주님을 알고 자신을 아는 것이 지식의 기본임을 아는 사람이 되게 하소서.
기도하오니 그를 편하고 안락한 길로 인도하지 마시고 고난과 도전의 긴장과 자극 속으로 이끌어 주소서. 폭풍 속에서 의연히 서 있는 법을 배우게 하시고 실패한 이들에 대한 연민을 알게 하소서. 마음이 깨끗하고 목표가 높은 사람이 되게 하소서. 남을 다스리기 전에 먼저 자신을 다스리는 사람 웃는 법을 알면서도 우는 법 또한 잊지 않는 사람 미래로 나아가지만 과거 또한 잊지 않는 사람이 되게 하소서. 그리고 이 모든 것이 이뤄진 후에도 넉넉한 유머감각을 더해 주셔서 늘 진지함을 잃지 않으면서도 너무 심각한 사람이 되지 않게 하소서. 그에게 겸손함을 주셔서 참으로 위대한 것은 소박함에 있고 참된 지혜는 열린 마음에 있으며 참된 힘은 온유함에서 나온다는 것을 늘 잊지 않게 하소서.
그리하여 그의 아버지인 제가 감히 “내가 헛되이 살지 않았노라”고 속삭일 수 있게 하소서.
Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak; and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility, so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain!” Amen
