우리는 내일 일을 알지 못합니다. 진실로 우리는 아는게 없습니다. 그러나 하나님은 전능하시므로 모든 것을 아십니다. 그러므로 우리는 하나님 앞에서 겸손해야 합니다. 토마스 머튼(Thomas Merton 1915-1968)은 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리가 얼마나 겸손한 복종과 사랑으로 하나님께 완전하게 자신을 드리는가에 비례해서 그분을 알게 됩니다. 하나님을 본 다음에 행동하는 것이 아닙니다. 먼저 행동하십시오. 그러면 하나님이 보이기 시작할 것입니다. 하나님을 믿기도 전에 그분을 분명하게 보려고 기다리는 자들이 믿음의 여정을 시작조차 못하는 이유가 바로 거기에 있습니다.” 다음은 Merton 의 기도입니다.
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
